A guide to care and costs

Chapters

Take these to the conversation

What can I ask before paying?

Ask for plain answers you can keep.

Read these from your phone or write down the ones that matter to you. There is no need to learn medical terms before asking what a charge means.

About the appointment

  • Who does my assessment, and where can I check that person’s licence?
  • What does the visit fee include?
  • What do I pay if no medicine is prescribed?
  • Will I have a chance to ask questions about other ways to address my concern?

About the medicine

  • What is its full name?
  • Does this medicine have approval, or would it be prepared to order?
  • Why does this option fit my health concern?
  • Which pharmacy would prepare or supply it?
  • What does the quoted medicine price cover?
  • What written information comes with it?

About the whole bill

  • Can I have the total with each item listed?
  • Does the first price change later?
  • Are tests and a review of their results included?
  • What does my plan need to approve payment?
  • How much would I owe if insurance declines?
  • Are later visits and messages part of the fee?

About leaving or pausing

  • How do I stop repeat charges?
  • What is the cancellation deadline?
  • What is refundable if care does not go ahead?
  • Can I keep a copy of these terms and my records?

Ask the person giving the quote to mark anything they cannot yet price. Then agree how you will get the missing answer.

When the answer is hard to follow

Ask them to explain it without shorthand. Try: What does that mean for my care, and what would I pay? You can ask for time to read the written terms.
